For each instrument we use, we require at least one dedicated channel for tracking, as this is how we get the signal of the instrument transported to be recorded. If we record the instrument from multiple angles, we need multiple channels to transport these multiple signals.
A channel doesn't have to perform any specific actions; it can simply pass on the signal without altering it, essentially acting as a conduit. However, a channel can also perform various functions and be part of a more extensive setup known as a channel strip.
## Channel Strip
A channel strip may encompass multiple elements, and within the channel strips of our SSL console, you will find these components, which can be optionally utilized:
- Pre-amplifier
- Trim
- Filters
- EQualizer
- Compressor
- Gate
- Aux sends
- Panning
