Microphone

To capture Sally’s vocals, we’re using a Shure SM7B dynamic microphone. This microphone is renowned for its versatility and has been used on iconic recordings such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. It’s a reliable and relatively affordable option, often available for a few hundred dollars. The SM7B is a dynamic microphone known for its flat, wide-range frequency response, which makes it suitable for various vocal styles without introducing coloration to the sound.

Additional Gear

The SM7B’s signal, being relatively low, is boosted using a Cloudlifter CL-1, which requires phantom power (indicated by “PHA”) to provide clean gain. Next, it passes through an 1176 compressor to control vocal dynamics, followed by the ADL 1500 tube compressor, which adds warmth. Unless otherwise noted, the signal is routed through the SSL console’s preamp and channel strip for further shaping.
