Audio Track Mixer Automation Modes

The Audio Track Mixer in Premiere Pro uses automation modes to control how keyframes are recorded and played back. Understanding these modes is essential for effective audio mixing.

Automation Modes

ModeBehavior
OffIgnores existing keyframes; allows real-time control without interference
ReadPlays back existing keyframes; does not allow changes
WriteRecords keyframes continuously during playback; overwrites existing
LatchStarts recording when a control is touched; continues until playback stops
TouchRecords while adjusting; returns to previous value when released

Accessing Automation Mode

  1. Open Window > Audio Track Mixer
  2. Locate the dropdown at the top of each track channel (defaults to "Read")
  3. Click to select a different mode

If the dropdown is not visible, click the hamburger menu (≑) and enable Show Track Controls.

Recording Keyframes

Automation modes record keyframes only during playback:

  1. Set track to Latch or Touch
  2. Press Play
  3. Adjust faders, pans, or effect parameters in real-time
  4. Stop playback
  5. Switch back to Read to hear the automation

Common Misconception

Read mode does not allow manual keyframe editing. It only plays back existing keyframes.

For manual (non-real-time) keyframe editing, use the timeline:

  1. Expand the audio track in the timeline
  2. Right-click track header > Show Track Keyframes > Volume
  3. Use the Pen tool (P) or Ctrl+Click to add keyframes
  4. Drag keyframes with the Selection tool (V)

Viewing Track Keyframes

By default, Premiere shows clip keyframes. To view track keyframes:

  1. Click the Show Keyframes button in the track header
  2. Select Show Track Keyframes
  3. Choose the parameter (Volume, Mute, or effect name)
