Con Sordino

What it is: Playing with a mute clipped onto the bridge, dampening the vibrations.

What it sounds like: Veiled, distant, intimate. The upper overtones are softened, giving a silvery, hushed quality. Not just quieter — a fundamentally different color.

When to use it: Quiet, reflective passages. Night scenes. Anything that needs to feel restrained or inward. Pairs beautifully with Harmonics and sul tasto.

Watch out: Players need several beats of rest to clip the mute on or take it off. You cannot write "con sordino" on a downbeat after they were playing "senza sordino" on the previous beat. Plan ahead.

Tip: Mark "con sord." to apply and "senza sord." to remove. Give at least 2-4 beats of rest for the switch.
