Sul Ponticello and Sul Tasto

What they are: Changes in where the bow contacts the string. Ponticello = near the bridge. Tasto = over the fingerboard.

Sul ponticello sounds glassy, metallic, and eerie. It emphasizes upper harmonics and strips away the fundamental. Great for horror, tension, or otherworldly textures.

Sul tasto sounds soft, breathy, and hollow. It suppresses upper harmonics, giving a muted, flute-like quality. Great for gentle, mysterious passages.

When to use them: Any time you want to change tone color without changing the notes. These are color tools, not volume tools.

Tip: Mark "ord." (ordinario) when you want players to return to normal bowing position.
